Royal Canadian Mounted Police
The RCMP is a (national) police force of federal
character of Canada oversees compliance with federal laws. It also has
agreements with the three territories and eight provinces to act as provincial
police.
The RCMP should play an unusually wide range of
duties: those derived from its exercise in rural and urban areas; protecting
the Prime Minister of the Canadian government, visiting dignitaries and
diplomatic missions; due to their status as federal police, including the prosecution
of fraud, forgery and other related matters; counterterrorism and national
security services and international police force, under agreements with other
states. The security service of the RCMP was a precursor of Canadian security
intelligence service (Canadian intelligence agency), which was operational
until 1984 and was responsible for the activities of intelligence and
counterintelligence.
HISTORY
The force predecessor to the RCMP, the North West
Mounted Police (NWMP) was established on May 23, 1873 by Sir John A. Macdonald,
Canada's prime minister, in an attempt to maintain order (and secure Canadian
sovereignty) in the Northwest Territories, (then including current Alberta,
Nunavut, Saskatchewan and most of modern Manitoba). This need was relatively
urgent, as there were reports regarding whiskey traders United States,
especially of Fort Whoop-Up causing problems for the region, which ultimately
ended in the Slaughter of Cypress Hills. This armed force in principle would
call Nort West Mounted Rifles (mounted Rifles Northwest), but the name was
rejected to sound too military, as Macdonald feared might cause problems with
the First Nations and the United States. Following suggestions of his cabinet,
Macdonald decided that the force would red uniforms. It was organized similarly
to a cavalry regiment of the British Army, organization still retains some
traditions, such as the Musical Ride, a display of horsemanship.
